Wix SEO · Honest Platform Limits · UK / USA / Canada

Wix isn’t why you don’t rank. Usually.

The 'Wix is bad for SEO' folklore is years out of date: the platform handles titles, metas, sitemaps, canonicals, schema and server-side rendering competently. The real constraints are narrower and structural, and most Wix sites we audit have never used the platform's own advanced controls, which is a cheaper first move than any rebuild.

Wix owners arrive braced for bad news, usually delivered by someone quoting a rebuild. The honest position is less dramatic: the platform stopped being an SEO liability years ago for the site types most of its users run, and the sites that genuinely need to leave it know why for structural reasons. Everything below distinguishes the two.

Chapter 01 · What Wix does fine

The fundamentals are covered

Editable titles and meta descriptions, automatic XML sitemaps, canonical control, 301 redirects, robots directives, structured-data editing, alt text, and server-side rendered content: the base layer search needs is present and, on modern templates, delivered on a fast CDN. The platform even ships an SEO Setup Checklist that most site owners complete halfway and abandon. Finishing it, then going past it, resolves a surprising share of “Wix does not rank” complaints.

Chapter 02 · The genuine limits

Where the platform actually constrains you

URL structures on blog and store sections follow platform patterns you cannot fully redesign, which matters when information architecture is the ranking lever (large catalogues, deep service hierarchies). Server-side access is limited: no log files, redirect logic bounded by the built-in tool. Performance ceilings appear on media-heavy templates with several apps installed. And past a few hundred pages, editorial management becomes the constraint even when SEO is not.

Chapter 03 · The optimisation order

What we actually do inside Wix

Indexation and duplication first (page duplicates, thin auto-generated pages, index settings), then architecture using the URL patterns available, then real content per service and area (the part no platform supplies), then structured data through the markup editor, then subtractive speed work: unused apps removed, media compressed and sized, autoplay video demoted, animation-heavy sections simplified. Measured on CrUX field data, not lab scores.

Chapter 04 · Migration honesty

When leaving is genuinely right

Migrate for structure: URL architecture the platform cannot express, catalogue or editorial scale it cannot manage, integrations it blocks, or performance that stays red after real optimisation. Do not migrate on reputation. When migration is right we handle it with the full protection method (inventories, template-logic redirects, staged validation) described on the migration page, and we can build the replacement. Related platform work: Squarespace, WordPress, Webflow.

Is Wix actually bad for SEO?

Not any more, and the reputation lags the product by years. Modern Wix handles the fundamentals competently: editable titles and metas, clean-ish URLs, automatic sitemaps, structured data controls, canonical management and server-side rendering of content. The genuine constraints are narrower than the folklore: limited control over some technical outputs, less flexible URL structures for complex sites, and performance ceilings on media-heavy templates. For local service businesses and small brochure sites, Wix is rarely the reason a site does not rank.

What are the real Wix SEO limitations?

Four that matter. URL structure rigidity on blog and store paths, which constrains information architecture on larger sites. Server-side control gaps: no true log-file access and limited redirect logic beyond the built-in tool. Performance ceilings on heavy templates and apps, particularly Core Web Vitals on media-rich pages. And scaling friction: past a few hundred pages, editorial and technical management becomes painful in ways WordPress or a coded site would not.

How do you actually improve a Wix site's rankings?

The same order as anywhere, executed within the platform: fix indexation and duplication first (Wix's SEO Setup Checklist covers the base, then we go past it), then information architecture with the URL structures available, then genuinely useful page content per service and location, then structured data via the markup editor, then image and app discipline for speed. Most Wix sites we audit have never used the platform's own advanced controls, which is a cheaper first move than migration.

Should I migrate off Wix?

Only for structural reasons, not reputational ones. Migrate when you need URL architecture Wix cannot express, when you have outgrown its editorial management at scale, when performance stays red after genuine optimisation, or when you need integrations the platform blocks. Do not migrate because a forum said Wix is bad: migrations carry real ranking risk, and we would rather quote a fix than a rebuild you did not need.

Can Wix sites hit good Core Web Vitals?

Yes on disciplined builds, with more effort than a coded site: the platform serves media through its CDN and lazy-loads sensibly, but heavy templates, video backgrounds, oversized hero images and accumulated third-party apps push field data red. The work is subtractive: strip unused apps, compress and correctly size media, avoid autoplay video above the fold, and simplify animation-heavy sections. We measure against CrUX field data because that is what ranks.

Does Wix handle local SEO properly?

Adequately: it supports LocalBusiness structured data, location pages and the standard on-page signals, which is most of what local ranking needs from a website. The heavy lifting in local SEO happens off the site anyway (Google Business Profile, reviews, citations), so a Wix local business is rarely platform-constrained. Multi-location businesses past a dozen sites start to feel the management friction.

What does Wix SEO work cost?

One-off Wix optimisation projects from £800: platform controls configured properly, structure and content fixed, schema added, speed work done. Ongoing retainers from £650/month for local businesses, £950/month where competitive content and links are needed. Migration advice is free during the audit, including the honest answer that you should stay put.

Summary: Wix handles SEO fundamentals competently; its real constraints are URL rigidity, limited server control, performance ceilings on heavy templates, and management friction at scale. Configure the platform properly, fix architecture and content, strip the app bloat, and migrate only for structural reasons. Related: WordPress SEO, migrations, small business SEO.
