On-Page SEO · Striking Distance First · UK / USA / EU

Page eleven is worth more than a new blog post.

Every site has pages ranking 8 to 15 for commercial queries: proven relevance, one alignment pass from page one. We start there, then fix the internal linking that decides which pages accumulate authority at all, because both are cheaper and faster than creating anything new.

On-page SEO is where the cheapest available rankings live, and where most budgets never look because publishing new content feels more like progress. The pages you already have, ranking just off page one with proven relevance, are usually one careful pass from doubling their traffic.

Chapter 01 · Striking distance

Fix what nearly works already

Search Console lists them: queries where a page averages positions 8 to 15 with real impressions. Each is a page Google already considers relevant and merely ranks below better answers. The pass is systematic, align title and headings to the actual query, close the depth gap against page-one results, cover the subtopics and entities the current version omits, add internal links from your strongest relevant pages, and make the conversion path obvious. Cheap, fast, repeatable, and the first thing we do on nearly every engagement.

Chapter 02 · Internal linking

Decide where authority collects

Internal links route authority, shape crawl depth and tell Google which pages own which topics, and most sites hand all three decisions to their navigation by default. Systematic work maps hub-and-spoke relationships per topic cluster, links established pages into the targets that need lift with descriptive anchors, removes the everything-links-to-everything dilution, and gives orphaned money pages a route in. On sites past a hundred pages this is frequently the single highest-impact on-page project available.

Chapter 03 · Depth without stuffing

Coverage replaced density

Keyword density is dead as a concept and harmful as a habit, stuffing measurably reduces AI citation likelihood and has not helped rankings in years. The modern equivalent is coverage: does the page address the concepts, questions and specifics a knowledgeable person would include, at the depth the query demands. We assess against what currently ranks, then close the gap with substance rather than repetition, which also happens to be what makes a page quotable by AI engines.

Chapter 04 · Structure for both audiences

Readable, and liftable

The same structural choices serve humans and machines: an answer-first block near the top, question-shaped headings that mirror real phrasing, concrete numbers and specifics, FAQ blocks with schema, honest dates and visible authorship. When on-page work is done this way, ranking improvements and AI-citation improvements arrive from the same edit, which is the strongest argument against buying them as separate services. Related: content briefs, schema, prioritisation.

What is the fastest on-page win available to most sites?

Pages already ranking 8 to 15 for commercial queries: they have proven relevance and need alignment rather than creation. Title and heading alignment to the actual query, content depth matched to what page one provides, entity and subtopic coverage the current version misses, internal links from relevant existing pages, and a clear conversion path. Moving a page from 11 to 5 often takes an afternoon and outperforms a month of new content, which is why it is the first thing we look at.

Do title tags still matter as much as people say?

They matter, with a caveat everyone ignores: Google rewrites titles frequently, so the goal is not keyword stuffing but writing a title so clearly matched to the query and page that rewriting is unnecessary. When Google replaces your title, that is diagnostic feedback, usually that the title over-promised, under-described or repeated boilerplate. We treat rewrite rates as a signal rather than an annoyance.

How important is internal linking really?

It is the most under-used lever in on-page work, particularly on sites over a hundred pages. Internal links decide which of your pages accumulate authority, how deep the crawler goes, and which content Google associates with which topics. Most sites concentrate links on navigation and orphan their money pages. The fix is systematic: identify hub-and-spoke relationships, link from established pages to targets with descriptive anchors, and remove the dilution of linking everything to everything.

Is keyword density a real thing?

No, and chasing it actively hurts: the Princeton GEO research found keyword stuffing measurably reduces AI citation likelihood, and Google's systems stopped rewarding density long ago. What replaced it is entity and subtopic coverage: does the page discuss the concepts a genuine expert would, in the depth the query needs. That is measurable, improvable, and unrelated to how many times a phrase appears.

What about optimising for AI answers on-page?

Same page, additional structure: an answer-first block that stands alone if lifted, concrete specifics rather than hedged generalities, question-shaped headings matching real phrasings, FAQ blocks with schema, honest dates and named authorship. These changes serve human readers too, which is the tell that they are legitimate rather than gaming. Detail on the AI SEO page.

How do you prioritise which pages to optimise?

By expected value: current position (striking distance first), query commercial value, existing impressions in Search Console, and how far the page sits from the standard set by the pages currently winning. Search Console's query-by-page data is the most under-used prioritisation asset most businesses own, and it is free.

What does on-page work cost?

Page-level optimisation from £150 per page for standard commercial pages, less at volume, more for research-heavy or technical pages requiring expert input. Site-wide on-page programmes (audit, prioritisation, systematic optimisation, internal-link rebuild) from £1,800 as a project, or inside retainers from £950/month.

Summary: On-page SEO delivers the cheapest available wins: optimise striking-distance pages first, rebuild internal linking to route authority deliberately, replace density thinking with entity and subtopic coverage, and structure pages so ranking and AI-citation improvements arrive together. Prioritise with free Search Console data. Related: content, schema. From £150 per page.
